Work Injury Compensation for Platform Workers

From January 1, 2025, platform workers will be covered under the Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA) for work-related accidents. This ensures adequate financial protection in case of injury. Please refer here for detailed information.

When platform workers can claim

All Deliveroo riders can make a claim under WICA if they were injured while performing the following tasks for delivery operators:

  1. Pick-up
When the platform worker begins to travel to the pick-up or collection location until the platform worker leaves the pick-up or collection location, including returning to the vehicle, where applicable for delivery platform services.
  2. Delivery
When the platform worker begins to travel to the drop-off or delivery location until the platform worker leaves the drop-off or delivery location, including returning to the vehicle, where applicable for delivery platform services.

A platform worker can also make a claim under WICA if the platform worker contracted an Occupational Disease in the course of work.

Types of compensation under WICA

Platform workers will have the same scope and level of WIC benefits as employees, including:

  • Income loss compensation
  • Medical expenses
  • Lump sum compensation for permanent incapacity, current incapacity or death

However, compensation for light duties will not apply to platform workers.

What platform workers should do when a work accident occurs

  1. Take note of the accident time and location, for example, the street name, lamp post number, or the exact location in the shopping mall.
  2. Take photos of the accident site, including your damaged vehicle, the other vehicle's details if there was a collision, the vicinity of the accident site, or any injuries sustained.
  3. Take down the contact details of witnesses if there are any.
  4. Retrieve supporting information from the platform app or website to show which work task you were at during the time of the accident.
  5. Seek medical attention.
  6. Inform your platform operators of the work accident as soon as possible.
  7. Cooperate with your platform operators and their insurers by providing supporting documents—such as original medical certificates, medical reports, medical bills, or photographs of the accident—to facilitate the processing of your WIC claim. Complete this form to begin the process.

The platform worker will be notified of their work injury claim after the platform operator has given notice of the accident to MOM and the relevant platform operator's insurer. The notification will include the case reference number and the insurer's details. The platform worker can check the status of the claim online.

Rider Third Party Liability

Rider Third Party Liability

Covers cyclists and walkers when working. It also covers scooter and car riders when they’re ‘off-vehicle’, for example, when walking to pick up and deliver orders.

You will get USD1,500,000 of cover in case you cause injury to someone whilst at work. It also gives you protection in case you damage someone else’s property whilst working, such as other vehicles or buildings. Legal costs are included in the cover.

Here are a few important things to remember:

  • This does not replace your own motor insurance. If you use a scooter, motorbike or car to do deliveries, you still need to purchase your own motor insurance.
  • This doesn’t cover any damage caused to your own vehicle.
  • There will be a zero policy excess for third party liability claims.

If you’ve been injured, or someone else has been injured or their property has been damaged, while you were riding with Deliveroo, here’s what you should do:

  1. Safety always comes first. In the event of an emergency, the first thing you should do is call the emergency services to make sure you get any assistance and medical treatment you need. A doctor must be consulted as soon as possible after an accident.
  2. If someone else is involved, you should stop and give your details to them – including your full name, your rider ID, your address, and if relevant, your vehicle registration number. You should also get their details. If you don’t exchange details at the time of the accident, please report it to the police as soon as possible.
  3. Once you have made your claim please contact Segdwick for any further questions by emailing deliverooclaimsint@uk.sedgwick.com

What’s the process for making a claim?
  1. As soon as possible after the accident has happened, please report it to Sedgwick directly and fill out the claims form [deliverooclaimsint@uk.sedgwick.com].
  2. Sedgwick will contact you directly to get everything they need to investigate and process the claim. They will take care of everything for you when it comes to your claim – including answering your questions.
  3. If your claim is approved, payment to you will be made directly to your bank account, and you will be notified by Sedgwick to confirm payment and the amount. If a payment is made to a third party, Sedgwick will do this on your behalf. Each claim is different, but Sedgwick handles all claims as quickly as possible and keep you informed, every step of the way. Payments are made electronically and are processed immediately once agreement has been reached.

What information will I need to provide during a claim?

You’ll need to provide some evidence to support your claim – either when you first make the claim, or any time during the claim process. Sedgwick will probably ask you:

  • Can you explain what happened?
  • When did the accident take place?
  • Where did it happen?
  • Did the accident cause any damage to someone else’s vehicle or property?
  • Do you have any photos of any damage?
  • Can you provide names and contact details for anyone else who was involved in this accident?
  • Did anyone see the accident? If so, can you provide their name and contact details?
  • If you have a statement and reference number from the police, can you share this?

How do I update my details?

It’s important that you make sure we have the right information about you, including your full name, email address and vehicle type. This means you can be protected by our insurance cover. Please visit our support page to update your details if they ever change.

What happens if I work for other companies too?

Lots of riders work with Deliveroo and other companies in the same hour. You’re completely free to do that and you will still be covered by free accident insurance when you work with us.

However it’s worth knowing that if an accident happens while you’re offline, or you haven’t been online in the Deliveroo app in the past hour, you won’t be covered for any claims.

Is there an excess to pay when making a claim?
