Tell us abit about yourself.
I used to work in warehouse logistics just a few years ago, before feeling the need to try something entirely different. I was particularly drawn to food delivery after spotting several Deliveroo cyclists and riders around my residential area, and always wondered what it must have been like. I’ve owned a motorcycle license since my teen years so I decided to just give it a shot. Everything fell into place after that—now I ride with Deliveroo full time to support my three children.
How did your family and friends react?
They were very happy and supportive of my decision, although some were quite worried about my safety so it took a little convincing and assurance from my part. Riding has always been my passion afterall, and now I can do it while supporting my children. I find the flexibility to work as and when I want most helpful.
What do you enjoy most about riding with Deliveroo?
First and foremost, it helps me to keep fit. Making customers happy is also what drives me to keep going, despite the challenges I face during deliveries. Last year, I met with an accident and I’m still recuperating and going through physiotherapy. I guess what keeps me going is being appreciated by the customers I meet; when they say thank you, smile or give tips—these things really make my day. I love going above and beyond to appease customers, which simultaneously contributes to a positive brand image for Deliveroo.
Would you encourage other women to join Deliveroo as a rider? If so, why?
Absolutely, although I personally know very few female riders myself! Naturally, there are various challenges on the job which is why I think being a rider needs a lot of patience and positivity. When I’m out doing deliveries, I'm also glad to be part of the greater food delivery rider community and I never hesitate to lend a helping hand to anyone in need no matter which company they ride with.
Is there a woman you admire or look up to?
I attend group counselling at a Family Service Centre (FSC) and I really look up to the single mothers I meet there. The stories I hear about how they cope always inspire me to do better, whether it’s tackling their personal challenges or finding ways to maintain a positive attitude towards life.
